RYA Competent Crew

RYA Competent Crew is an entry level yachting course for those with no previous experience – you need never have set foot on a boat before! This is the course where you learn to sail (if you haven’t done a dinghy course first) and you spend a week learning to be an active and useful crew member.

This is what the RYA has to say about Competent Crew:

This course is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers.

Experience living on board and really get to know the boat. Virtually all the course is hands on. You are the crew – without you the sails won’t go up and the boat won’t be steered.

By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day duties on board. You should also have visited some interesting places and had an enjoyable holiday.

Are you looking to take your Competent Crew with an instructor with whom you can proceed to Day Skipper theory at your convenience when back at home in Switzerland? Are you a non-native English speaker who would appreciate our skipper’s language skills to make sure you experience as few barriers as possible while taking a course that is run in English? Cloud Nine Sailing’s skipper Emma works with our friends Seafarer in Greece and Jolly Parrot in Gibraltar to deliver practical RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper courses in both tidal and non-tidal waters, so you will ultimately be able to progress to chartering a boat of your own on holiday.

In the Ionian, we can guarantee that you will visit some interesting places – and even if you find sailing is not for you, you will have enjoyed some island hopping, maybe swum in the sea, and most likely explored plenty of tavernas too! Our students in October 2017 even got to play with the cruising chute (the “kite”).

RYA Competent Crew can be added to any of our holiday packages for an additional fee of CHF 250 per student. For more information check out our FAQs for RYA courses
